About
Sophia Hansen-Knarhoi is a composer/singer songwriter based in Boorloo/Perth. Currently Completing her final semester at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in Music Composition and Technology, Sophia is a self produced artist creating ethereal ambient folk and experimental work with lyrical poignancy. She is a vocalist/cellist/guitarist/sound artist, working collaboratively through performer integrated sound design for theatre, dance, film, and contemporary art. She is driven to authentically capture the essence of stories, whether they be others stories or her own.
Sophia uses her skills as a multi-disciplinary artist to expand on her ever growing practice as a composer. Her collaborative work and solo song writing career are intertwined, with each practice influencing the other. She has spent the past year studying abroad at Goldsmiths University of London, with support from the Barbara Macleod Scholarship from WAAPA, and funding from PPCA.
Sophia has been internationally recognised, playing shows across London, with radio recognition across the US, Europe and Australia, following the release of her debut EP, ‘Wildflowers’, on indie label Ba Da Bing! Records of New York (Sharon Van Etten). ‘Wildflowers’ was mixed by Jono Steer (Angie McMahon) and Mastered by Greg Calbi and Steve Fallone (Taylor Swift). Sophia has received praise internationally from KEXP, Folk Radio UK, Brooklyn Vegan, Postcards From The Underground and many more, and nationally from Triple J, RTRFM, FBi Radio and RRR.
Sophia has collaborated with dance and theatre makers with music commissioned by Co3 Contemporary Dance, STRUT Dance, LINK Dance Company, Kalyakoorl Collective and Flying Bicycle Collective with works supported by the Australian Council for the Arts, Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and many more. Her compositional work and performance have featured in Awesome Arts Festival, Fringe, State of Play, Joondalup festival and the Blueroom Theatre. Her recent commissions include an installation for Conditions Studio Programme in London, and my score for the Goldsmiths University of London Masters Graduate film ‘Where We Belong’.
